Becoming Zlatan

Fredrik Gertten, Magnus Gertten, 99 min, Sweden, Italy, Netherlands.

The decisive years of Swedish footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, told through rare archival footage where a young Zlatan speaks openly about his life and challenges. We follow Zlatan, from his debut in Malmö FF in 1999, through his conflictual years with Ajax Amsterdam, up to the final breakthrough with Juventus in 2005. Throughout his journey, Zlatan stays true to himself. When he finally succeeds in Italy he is closing the doors to his private life. Football superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic is an enigma, but in this story from his breakthrough years, he - for a moment - gives some glimpses into who he really is.

Becoming Zlatan is a co-production between directors Fredrik Gerrten (Bananas!*, Big Boys Gone Bananas!*, Bikes vs Cars) and Magnus Gerrten (Harbour of Hope, Tusen Bitar, Every Face Has a Name). It's not the first time they've worked together on a football-related film - the pair has previously produced two documentaries about their local football team Malmö FF, where Zlatan debuted.

Becomig Zlatan is shown at Doc Lounge as a part of the livestreaming project Doc Lounge Live.

Becoming Zlatan is presented in collaboration with Moving Docs - a EDN initiative supported by Creative Europe, with the aim to create innovative outreach strategies and provide opportunities for urban and rural European audiences to enjoy regular screenings of documentary films through a wide variety of media and platforms.
