Bushdoctor

Rehad Desai, 65 min, South Africa.

Bushdoctor celebrates the vast medico-botanical skills of southern Africa’s traditional healers while exposing the piracy of their ancient knowledge by international pharmaceutical companies. In the insatiable search for new drugs, the pharmaceutical giants steal, reprocess, patent and market old African knowledge under new guises in the multi-billion dollar international marketplace. In this new imperialism, the original owners of African medicinal knowledge receive little in return. Their communities remain some of the poorest on earth, while the drug czars roll in gross profits on the back of their ancient skills.
