The Network

Eva Orner, 97 min, Australia.

During Taliban rule (1996-2001) were televisions banned and when the ban was lifted finally opened up a whole new world with new opportunities for the people of Afghanistan. The Network tells the story about Tolo TV - Afghanistan's first independent / non-state-owned TV network. Oscar-winning directorial debut explores Eva Orners TVs and power of the media to portray and change the society for better or worse - in a country where live executions are replaced with Idol Similar Afghan Star and 24-copy Eagle 4 (sponsored by the American Embassy). The 800 employees, many of whom are women, put a lot of faith and hope in the new TV station and its changing forces - but what happens when foreign troops that helped start it leaves the country? The Network provides a complex picture of how propaganda disseminated through the media, and how it can be both good and bad at the same time.
