Eurovision and punk at Doc Lounge Helsinki!

This week it’s time for the music party of the year - Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, Austria! Representing Finland is the punk band Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät, a big phenomenon in the country, and to celebrate that Doc Lounge Helsinki is having a special Eurovision evening in their honor tomorrow, May 19.

“We start the evening off with the screening of the 2012 documentary The Punk Syndrome”, Doc Lounge Helsinki’s project manager Liina Sipilä told us. “It follows the band in their early years on their road to success, which happened quite fast actually. The film is very humane, funny and totally steals your heart. It is one of those films that you can really watch over and over again and be entertained and moved every time.”

After the screening, Doc Lounge Helsinki will tune in to the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 at 10pm. “We also have some surprise program planned, including a video message from the band guys in Vienna. We expect a very fun night with a lot of laughter and excitement!”

Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät is made up of Pertti, Kari, Toni and Sami, four handicapped men. “I think Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät really has something to offer for everyone even if they are not huge punk fans”, Liina points out. “Their message to me personally speaks about being able to do your thing and following your heart regardless of any obstacles and what other people might think and say. And that is a pretty powerful and universal message that I think a lot of people can relate to.”

This last season, Doc Lounge Helsinki has been run by DocPoint-elokuvatapahtumat ry, which also organises the yearly DocPoint - Helsinki Documentary Film Festival, to great success. Is is held at the cozy Lavaklubi in the basement of the Finnish National Theatre, where you can enjoy films in super comfy sofas and chairs while grabbing a drink and tapas from the bar. “For me, it has been a real treat, because even though I love our festival, it only happens once a year”, Liina said. ”With Doc Lounge I get to organise sweet clubs once a month, and see more movies throughout the year! I think the Fall Season will be even more amazing!”
