International Women's Day Swedish Premiere of Sonita
We are celebrating International Women's Day at Doc Lounge with the Sundance award-winning, Sonita - screening for the first time ever in Sweden tonight at our clubs in Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm as part of a special collaboration with Tempo Film Festival.
The film picked up the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize AND the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and recently received a glowing 5 star review from The Guardian. In this compelling film, we meet 18-year old Sonita living in Iran - who, in her ideal world, would have Michael Jackson for a father and Rihanna as her mother. She captures her vision of her life as a famous rapper in her scrapbook, super-imposing her face on images of Rhianna performing to adoring crowds. However, for the time being at least, her only fans are the other teenage girls in a Tehran refugee shelter. There, Sonita, a refugee from Afghanistan, gets counseling for the traumas she has suffered and guidance in shaping her future. However her family has a very different future planned for her than in her dreams: as a bride back in Afganistan she’s worth $9,000. What’s more, women aren’t actually allowed to sing in Iran. And Sonita isn't just rapping about anything - but about women's rights, and the issues she sees in front of her every day. Director Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami ends up more involved in Sonita's plight than she had originally planned, taking actions towards securing Sonita's freedom, and in the process raising questions about the conflicted role of the documentary filmmaker. This is just one of the many twists and turns in this surprising film, well-worthy of the awards and accolades it has been receiving in recent months.
Tonight (8 March) you can celebrate International Women's Day with us as we screen Sonita at Doc Lounge Malmö, Doc Lounge Stockholm, and Doc Lounge Gothenburg along with special guests and live music.
The film has been shown previously in our Nordic network at Doc Lounge Tampere and Doc Lounge Turku in Finland and will go on to screen in the following cities in the coming weeks. DO NOT MISS!!
